"Lifelong smoker's story shocks students
The Edmonton model is dying of cancer and calls herself the world's greatest idiot for letting it happen. Kelly Egan reports.

Hillcrest High School students were moved to tears yesterday as Barbara Tarbox recounted how she was diagnosed with cancer after a lifetime of smoking. Now she is on a national crusade.
Jennifer Schutt, right, is comforted by Barbara Tarbox after Ms. Tarbox's speech to Hillcrest High School students.
Cancer stole the future from Barb Tarbox -- a mother, a wife, a model -- at age 41. And so she lives the present like a woman aflame with urgency, deathly sure there aren't many tomorrows.
Shouting, crying, arms raised in a crazed, messianic plea, Ms. Tarbox spoke to 700 students yesterday about the terrible toll inflicted by a life of smoking. Diagnosed with lung cancer in September, just as the school year began, she may not live to see the spring.
"You are looking at the world's greatest, greatest idiot," Ms. Tarbox told the students in the auditorium at Hillcrest High School, "and I want to tell you why."
The Edmonton resident is on a national crusade to convince young people of the evils of tobacco and has now spoken at more than 30 schools. Her powerful message reduced many of the audience to tears yesterday; so sad is her story, so deep and long is the catalogue of hurt.
Hers has been an especially tragic life. The mother of twin boys, she lost Patrick while he was still a baby and his brother Michael died of an undetected heart defect at the age of eight.
"I buried my son Michael, four years ago, on Dec. 23. And I buried my other twin son, Patrick, Dec. 28, 12 years ago. And now my nine-year-old daughter has to bury her mom."
Little Mackenzie will lose her mother for one reason, Ms. Tarbox concluded: "Because I smoked."
Without so much as a cough or a symptom, Ms. Tarbox, a smoker since the age of 11, discovered the cancer in a routine X-ray. It has now spread to her lymph nodes and her brain, where a large tumour is growing.
Several minutes into her 35-minute talk, Ms. Tarbox dramatically removed her blue hat, flinging it right off the stage to reveal a bald head, covered with a slight fuzz.
"It has eaten its way through and it now eats the bone," she shouted, eyes blazing. "Don't even think you can tell me what pain is."
It was pin-drop quiet in the auditorium as she detailed her physical decline: seizures, headaches, failing vision, the loss of 41 pounds in three months, a constant body chill, the blueish hue that has invaded her arms and legs, the black knuckles, the 18 pills of daily medication, the knowledge that she could die any day.
Ms. Tarbox said her own mother died of smoking-induced cancer 19 years ago and she failed to heed the doctor's warning at the time. Ms. Tarbox said she vomited for three days after her first cigarette but kept puffing, building up to a pack a day by the end of Grade 9, in an effort to be "cool." She told the students they were too intelligent, too full of promise to endanger their health.
"Let me tell every one of you, you are so above this," she said, standing before a giant photo of herself, occasionally putting an unlit cigarette in her mouth. "Never, ever, please, I beg of you, give the power that you have, to this."
Many students were visibly moved by the presentation, which was the culmination of an anti-smoking campaign going on in several high schools.
As the presentation ended, young girls were wiping their eyes, leaning on each other and crowding around Ms. Tarbox for a word of thanks or encouragement. She didn't hesitate to embrace the students or hold a young face in her hands.
"It worked. It was powerful. I think every single person was crying, except some of the guys," said Hiva Mikail, 16, a Glebe Collegiate student.
He was one of several students awarded prizes yesterday for helping to produce a TV commercial that discourages young people from smoking.
Ottawa's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Robert Cushman, said the televised messages, produced by the students, are part of a $650,000 campaign funded by Health Canada. He said the plan is to create a kind of reverse peer pressure in which the "cool kids" are senior students, all anti-smokers, who would pressure younger students not to start.
"They have to hear the stories, they have to see the storytellers," said Dr. Cushman, "because statistics are just enormous numbers which no one can fathom."
He said students who begin smoking before the age of 19 are often hooked for life. Those who don't start in their teens probably won't become smokers later, he added."
