Cate persoane?

Financial Matters

1. What is the tax structure in Cyprus?

Cyprus has a very low tax structure. Taxable salary components include Annual Gross Salary, Education/Child Care, Bonuses, etc. (1 Cyprus Pound = 2.1 USD.)

During the first three years following the year of your move to Cyprus, you can claim an exemption of 20% up to a maximum annual amount of CYP 5.000.

Chargeable Income Tax Rates
Up to CYP 10.000 NIL
CYP 10.001 to CYP 15.000 20%
CYP 15.001 to CYP 20.000 25%
CYP 20.001 and over 30%

2. What is the monthly expenditure for a single/family?

3. Where will I stay when I get to Cyprus?

You can opt for a fully furnished apartment or unfurnished apartment. The rent range mentioned in Cyprus Pounds is given below

Type Range – Furnished Apts. Range – Unfurnished Apts.
1 Bdr. 210–230 CyP 130 – 170 CyP
2 Bdr. 230-280 CyP 170 – 230 CyP
3 Bdr. 280-350+ CyP 230+ Cyp

A fully furnished apartment typically contains the following – fridge, gas stove + oven, washing m/c, TV, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, bed linen, quilts, towels, iron and ironing board, normal house furniture, telephone. Some apartments may even have air conditioners in one or more rooms.

The rent for unfurnished apartments is approximately 25-30% less. Furnishing it (used furniture) would cost approximately between CyP 1700 - CyP 2200. If you choose the un-furnished apt. model, in a year or so you can expect to have ‘recovered’ the expense of furnishing the apartment and after that pay a much lower rent. The other advantages are the flexibility you have in terms of getting furniture that is to your liking and need. It will also expand the choices available to you and make it much easier to find a suitable apartment.
Some essential items you are advised to carry if you do take the unfurnished option are bed linen including pillowcases, towels and an iron. The rest of the items are can be purchased here at reasonable rates.

4. How much does a car cost in Cyprus? Who will bear the cost of petrol and maintenance?

You get good Japanese cars viz. Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. 1000 – 2200 cc with a/c, power steering, power windows, stereo, automatic locking and full extras. The cost of a duty paid car varies between 5000 CyP – 6000 CyP according to the condition of the car, the model and the year of manufacture. The cost of running and maintaining the car will be borne by you. These cars usually require little or no maintenance.

There are a number of car dealers in Cyprus where you can buy good second hand Japanese and European cars. Some Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind are:

· Check the prices in at least 2 or 3 car dealers before making a decision.
· Do not accept a quotation unless you have firmly decided on the model and the price
· Do not make a payment unless you have cleared the driving test
· Check for the additional services the dealer is willing to provide viz. driving test, registration, servicing, garage facilities, etc
· Check for available car insurance policies
· Consult office colleagues. Their personal experiences with dealers can be a useful starting point

5. Can I drive using my Romanian driving license in Cyprus?

If you have a driving license from Romania, you will be required to appear for and clear the local driving test to obtain a Cyprus Driving License. If you have a European or American driving license you can exchange it for a Cyprus Driving License without having to sit for the driving test. Your International Driving Permit is valid for driving in Cyprus only if it specifically mentions that it is valid for Cyprus.
To obtain the Cypriot license you will need to appear for a driving test here. In case you come to Cyprus without a Romanian or International Driving Permit, you will first have to apply for a Learner’s License and subsequently take the test to obtain a Cypriot Driving License. The driving test is quite stiff. There are driving schools here from whom you can take driving lessons. A few driving lessons are in any case desirable, to familiarize yourself with the driving conventions and rules in Cyprus.

6. Can you provide me with some information on driving and transportation?

Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Using a mobile phone is a finable offence. Also vehicle drivers and all passengers must wear seat belts at all times. The maximum speed limit on the highways is 100 km per hour and minimum 65 km. On all other roads, the general speed limit is 80 km per hour unless a lower one is indicated. In built-up areas generally the speed limit is 50 km per hour.

As Limassol is situated in the center of the island the distance in any direction within Cyprus is approximately 1 – 3 hours. Petrol stations in all seaside areas and major towns are equipped with automatic pumps, accept bank notes and operate on a 24-hour basis.

Public transportation includes buses and taxis. The transurban service-taxis are shared taxis connecting all main towns (during daytime) and are very reasonably priced.

7. Are there English schools in Cyprus? When does the school session begin? What are the fees? What are the documents needed to be submitted to the school authorities?

There are 4 -5 good private English schools in Cyprus run on the British curriculum. The academic year starts in September, but some Private schools are flexible in their admission timings. The schools follow the semester system with tri-semesters or 4 semesters. Depending on the school and the class, the tuition fees would vary between 450-750 CyP. The company reimburses tuition fees / child care expenses up to USD 4000 pa. It would be a good idea to bring some of the books your child is currently using, in order to give the school authorities an idea about his current level, so that he can be fitted accordingly.
Documents that the school requires include:

§ Transfer certificate from the last school attended
§ Copy of birth certificate
§ Last school report
§ Medical certificate
§ Employment permit of the guardian (available once in Cyprus)
8. I have a young child and would like to know if there are any child-care / crèche and kindergarten facilities in Cyprus?

In Cyprus you have many options on child-care facilities. There are several employees here who have organized such facilities for their children. You can get more information, once you arrive here.

9. What kind of a place is Cyprus? Is it a safe place to live in? What are the means of entertainment in Cyprus?

Cyprus is an enchanting island and a tourist haven with lots to see and do. Apart from this, it is very peaceful and safe and in fact an ideal place to bring family. The local people understand and speak English and are hospitable. Cyprus is surrounded by beaches, in which you can take a daily dip. You can go for drives on weekends to picturesque spots viz. Pafos and Ayia Napa. You can go for a day picnic, camping or even skiing in winter, to Troodos Mountains, which is an hours drive away. All sorts of water sports are available. Water parks are open to the public in summer. Cinema halls here show the latest English movies.

The Turkish occupied area is to the North of Cyprus. You are allowed to visit the North of Cyprus during the day; however, we do not recommend an overnight. This is also recommended in order to avoid any problems with your future work permit renewals. In addition due to the fact that the Northern part of Cyprus is not acknowledged as a Legal Entity if there is any kind of accident, etc the Government of Cyprus can not intervene with their laws, etc. Therefore we would recommend being very careful during any visit

Am uitat sa precizez ca pana la 9000 CYP/an, nu se plateste impozit. Transportul public e aproape inexistent, asa ca o masina e ca si necesara.
